“The human heart has always interested and impressed me. (Our hearts beat about 100,000 times each day!) In fact, at 15 years of age, I wrote a novel about a man who had a cardiac arrest and about his resuscitation and hospitalization. It was then that I decided – and even promised myself – that I would become a cardiologist and ‘cure’ heart disease. Cardiology is today very different from what it was in those days, and I am an experienced cardiology specialist and researcher. But I am no less impressed or amazed by the heart now than I was as a youth. A beating heart is the very symbol of life, and life is what being a physician is about for me. With the advances that we’ve seen in cardiology over the years and that continue today, I’m able to truly improve and often extend people’s lives, and that’s my objective. I personally invest myself in my patients’ health, getting to know them and understand their concerns and their needs, because it’s a vital part of ensuring that I’m providing the most appropriate and effective care.”
